Area Served[]
The Victorville Fire Department (VFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Victorville, located in the Victor Valley region of San Bernardino County, at the southwestern edge of the Mojave Desert, 81 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The city's name honors California Southern Railroad's General Manager Jacob Nash Victor. Incorporated as a city on September 21, 1962, Victorville encompasses an area covering 74.01 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 134,810 inhabitants. Victorville is bordered by the town of Apple Valley on the east; the City of Hesperia on the south; and the City of Adelanto on the west. San Diego is 148 miles to the south and Las Vegas is 188 miles to the northeast.
Mutual Aid[]
The Victorville Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Apple Valley Fire Protection District, and with Mission Safety Services for responses to Victorville/Southern California Logistics Airport.
Department Profile[]
The Victorville Fire Department is budgeted for 59 sworn personnel including the fire chief, one division chief, three battalion chiefs, EMS staff, fire captains, fire engineers and firefighter/paramedics. Victorville's resources include five fire stations and nine front-line emergency vehicles, comprised of five medic engine companies, one medic aerial ladder truck company, two medic squads, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. In addition. Victorville cross staffs three Type 3 and one Type 6 wildland companies, one OES Type 3 wildland company, one hazardous materials response unit with trailer, and one water tender. The Southern California Logistics Airport/Victorville Airport, encompassing approximately 2,200 acres of the former George Air Force Base, lays within the borders of the city and is operated by the SCLA Authority which is comprised of Victorville City Council members. Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) however, is provided by a private company and not by the Victorville Fire Department. VFD is the second busiest fire department in San Bernardino County with approximately 22,000 emergency responses each year
Dispatch[]
The Victorville Fire Department is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.
History[]
The Victorville Businessman’s Association began serious discussions about the need for fire protection in 1923. Prior to that, fire suppression efforts were usually initiated by a very loosely organized group of volunteers using well pumps, the steam driven pumps on locomotives, or bucket brigades. The limited amount of fire suppression equipment those volunteers had at their disposal included at least one soda and acid “chemical engine”. On July 26, 1926, the Victorville County Fire Protection District was established. In 1930, the Victorville Volunteer Fire Department was created. The Victorville Fire Protection District remained an all volunteer operation until July 1, 1972, when a full-time fire chief was hired. In 1976, approximately 14 years after Victorville was incorporated, control of the Victorville Fire Protection District was assumed by the City of Victorville and six more full-time firefighters were hired. The Victorville Fire Department was officially formed on June 27, 1977. On June 24, 2008, the Victorville Fire Department entered into a contract for services with the San Bernardino County Fire for provision of fire, rescue, EMS and paramedic services to the community upon transition. On January 16th, 2018, the Victorville City Council voted to approve resumption of a city run fire department and directed staff to begin its formation, resulting in the reestablishment of the Victorville Fire Department on March 28, 2019 and termination of contract fire services provided by SBCoFD. Commencing June 15, 2018, ARFF services for the Southern California Logistics Airport, and until then provided by SBCoFD, were contracted to Mission Aviation Fire-Rescue, a private company.
