Area Served[]

The Vernon Fire Department served the City of Vernon, an almost exclusive industrial city located about three miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles in Central Los Angeles County, Southern California. Incorporated on September 22, 1905 and named after a dirt road, Vernon Avenue, that crossed its center, the city encompasses an area covering 5.16 square miles and has a nighttime population of 222 inhabitants.

History[]

The Vernon Fire Department was formed in 1927 and when dissolved, had 77 employees, four fire stations and a training tower at Fire Station 1. On August 6, 2019, Vernon City Council chose to contract fire protection services to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This resulted in the disbanding of the Vernon Fire Department effective October 21, 2020. Former Vernon Fire Stations 1 (76) and 2 (77) remained open, becoming LACoFD Fire Stations 13 and 52 respectively, while Fire Stations 3 and 4 were closed. Fire Station 3 may become an administrative office for Los Angeles County in the future.
