Area Served[]

The Ventura City Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Ventura, officially named San Buenaventura, Spanish for "Saint Bonaventure", a coastal city located some 68 miles northwest of Los Angeles in Ventura County, Southern California. Incorporated as a city on April 2, 1866, it encompasses an area covering 32.29 square miles and serves a population of approximately 110,763, making it the fourth largest city in the county. Ventura City is bordered by the unincorporated community of Casitas Springs in Santa Barbara County, and the Los Padres National Forrest to the northwest; the City of Ojai, Sulphur Mountain and the lower Black Mountain to the north; the City of Santa Paula and the unincorporated community of Somis to the east; the City of Oxnard to the south; and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

The Ventura City Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Ventura County Fire Department, the Oxnard Fire Department, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and with the United States Forest Service.

Department Profile[]

The Ventura City Fire Department consists of 75 sworn and 11 non-sworn personnel in three Divisions: Administration, Operations, and Fire Prevention. Daily operations staffing is 25 personnel. on three operational shifts working a 48/96 work schedule, out of six fire stations. VCFD's management team consists of one fire chief, one assistant fire chief, one fire marshal, one EMS coordinator, and four battalion chiefs. The department's resources include nine front-line emergency apparatus comprised of seven engine companies, one aerial ladder truck company, and one battalion chief vehicle. In addition, VCFD cross staffs a hazardous materials response unit, one OES Type 1 engine company, one OES Type 6 wildland unit, a water tender, and an ocean rescue team. Each engine and the ladder truck company consists of a fire captain, a fire engineer, and a firefighter-paramedic. The hazardous materials unit is part of the Ventura County Regional Hazmat Plan. Ventura City Hazmat team members assigned to Fire Station 6 are certified as hazmat technicians or specialists. In 2022, the Ventura City Fire Department responded to over 17,800 fire, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and rescue calls.

History[]

The Ventura City Fire Department was founded in 1875. Fire Station 4 at 8303 Telephone Road was closed due to budget cuts in July 2010, but reopened on January 21, 2012. The Ventura City Fire Department does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under contract by American Medical Response (AMR).
