History[]
Vancouver International Airport (IATA airport code YVR) opened July 22, 1931 on Sea Island, which was part of the Township, and now the City of Richmond. The Airport was also the site of Royal Canadian Air Force Station Sea Island which opened on July 22, 1940 as the British Commonwealth Air Training Program No. 8 Elementary Flying Training School. After the war the name was changed to RCAF Station Vancouver before closing March 31, 1964. Airside and structural fire protection was provided by the Vancouver Fire Department from 1931 to 1962, with the RCAF providing their own fire protection for RCAF Station Sea Island. The Department of National Defence took over all fire protection from 1962 to March 31, 1964, followed by the Department of Transport from April 1, 1964-1996. A contract was signed with Richmond Fire Rescue to take over fire protection in 1996. Richmond elected not to renew the contract, and YVR created its own Fire Service, which became operational on September 1, 2003. The current fire station is the third station since 1931. YVR is rated a Category 10 airport for crash fire protection.
