Agency Profile

The Utah Department of Natural Resources is the government department responsible for wildlife and habitat management in the state of Utah. The Division of Fire, Forestry & State Lands is responsible for Forest Health, responding to Wildland Fires and managing Sovereign Lands in Utah.

The Utah Department of Natural Resources is divided into 6 Areas:

• Bear River Area (BRS) - Serving Box Elder, Cache, Rich, and Weber Counties
• Central Area (SCS) - Serving Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, and Wayne Counties
• Northeast Area (NES) - Serving Daggett, Duchesne, Summit, Uintah, and Wasatch Counties
• Northwest / Wasatch Front Area (NWS) - Serving Davis, Morgan, Salt Lake, Tooele, and Utah Counties
• Southeast Area (SES) - Serving Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan Counties
• Southwest Area (SWS) - Serving Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane, and Washington Counties

The Department operates three fire department assistance programs:

• Cost-share for Wildfire Fighting Equipment.
• Federal Equipment for Local Fire Departments, and;
• Excess Property Programs.

History

The Lone Peak Hotshots were originally founded in 1991, formerly known as the Flame 'N' Go Hotshots. They were the first of three non-federal Interagency Hotshot Crews in the US and was the first state-sponsored Hotshot Crew in the country. The Lone Peak Engine program was established in 2001 with five Type 6 engines. Alta Hotshots were officially established in 2014.
