About[]

The Coast Guard Yard Fire Department is all-hazards department that protects the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, Maryland, home to the Coast Guard’s only heavy maintance facility. It is the only Coast Guard Fire Department that is comprised of 100% active duty military members, including the Fire Chief, and is staffed by enlisted Damage Controlmen, Machinery Technicians and Health Services Technicians. Previously, a Coast Guard Auxiliary (the civilian volunteer component of the U.S. Coast Guard) flotilla provided supplemental staffing in addition to the active duty servicemembers until around 2020. Personnel assigned may report already previously certified as firefighters and EMTs or may attend Department of Defense or local fire and EMS academies, including with the Baltimore City Fire Department and Prince George’s County Fire & EMS Department. The unit provides limited mutual aid into the local community, as the department duty hours cover the normal workday only. Local civilian agencies respond to on-base emergencies outside of the normal workday to include nights, weekends and holidays.

The CGFD is additionally responsible for fire inspections and prevention, and maintains a welding and carpentry shop in support of the installation.

CGFD provides Basic Life Support with members certified to at minimum First Aid and CPR, with most becoming Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians.

The ambulance program was transferred to the on-base medical clinic by 2000, and dis-established in 2015. Local EMS provides transport and the base clinic provides a basic life support quick response service only.
