Area Served[]

The Truckee Fire Protection District (TFPD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the Town of Truckee, the unincorporated communities of Soda Springs and the area surrounding a pair of freshwater lakes known as Serene Lakes (also known as Ice Lakes), all located in Placer County. in addition, TFPD provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the unincorporated community of Kingvale and a large portion of the 70-square mile Martis Valley, co-located in both Placer and Nevada Counties, The District is situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California, about 15 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe and about 39 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada. Truckee was named after a Paiute chief, whose assumed Paiute name was Tru-ki-zo. The District covers approximately 82 square miles in Nevada County, and 45.5 square miles in Placer County. The estimated resident population is approximately 25,000 with an estimated transitory population of at least 40,000. The area has a variety of development patterns, ranging from timber and forestlands and rural residential areas to high density residential, commercial and planned community development within the Town of Truckee. The District is bordered by the Tahoe National Forest as well as by California's Sierra County to the north; the Truckee River Canyon and the Nevada State Line to the east; Lake Tahoe, and the unincorporated communities of Cedar Flat, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach and Brockway to the southeast; the unincorporated community of Olympic Valley, formerly known as Squaw Valley, the North Fork of the American River, Coldstream Valley and Donner State Memorial Park to the south; the small unincorporated community of Emigrant Gap to the southwest; and the Lake Valley State Recreation Area to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

The Truckee Fire Protection District has mutual and/or automatic aid agreements with the United States Forest Service, the CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, the Northstar Fire Department, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, the Olympic Valley Fire Department, Sierra County (for ambulance mutual aid), the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (also for ambulance mutual aid), the Lake Tahoe Regional Fire Chiefs Association, as well as with neighboring departments in the state of Nevada.

Department Profile[]

the Truckee Fire Protection District is budgeted for 56 full-time staff, augmented by a number of part-time/seasonal staff, and part-time/non-safety staff, consisting of one Fire Chief, one Division Chief, one Fire Marshal, four Battalion Chiefs, twelve Fire Captains, and twenty-seven Firefighter/Paramedics, supported by one Administrative Services Director/Admin Officer, one Finance Director, one Fleet/Facility Director, two Fire Prevention Specialists, one Administrative Assistant, one Fleet/Facility Assistant, and one Fleet Mechanic. The District is divided into an Administration Division, a Field Operations Division, and a Fire Prevention Division. Each fire station has a minimum of one firefighter/paramedic on duty at all times. The Truckee Fire Protection District is part of a regional fire and emergency services delivery system operated by CAL FIRE and referred to as the Grass Valley Emergency Command Center (GVECC), located adjacent to the Nevada County Airport at 13102 Loma Rica Drive in Grass Valley, which provides dispatch services to over 30 agencies in El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Plumas and Yuba counties.

History[]

The Truckee Fire Protection District was formed in 1894. Since 1966, there have been seven annexations of lands within Nevada and Placer counties. Since the turn of the century, there have been four additional annexations, bringing the Floriston, Hobart Mills, Juniper Hills and Martis Heights areas into the District. In 2006, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) approved a reorganization of fire services, resulting in the Truckee Fire Protection District acquiring the lands that had been served by Donner Summit Public Utility District, including Soda Springs and Kingvale, as well as Serene Lakes and adjacent lands in Placer County.
