Toronto Fire Services

History[]

The Toronto Fire Department was established in 1874 for the old City of Toronto. The department was re-organized and renamed Toronto Fire Services (TFS) when the current City of Toronto was formed on January 1, 1998 through an amalgamation of the old City of Toronto and the other cities and boroughs of Metropolitan Toronto. The following fire departments became part of Toronto Fire Services:

Operations[]

Upon amalgamation in 1998, Toronto Fire re-organized all of their current and acquired stations into four divisions; North Command (1), East Command (2), South Command (3), and West Command (4). Each division is overseen by one Division Commander and four Platoon Chiefs (one for each shift) and is divided into three or four districts. All stations and apparatus were renumbered according to the divisions and districts established. TFS employs 3,000 civilian and uniformed employees and responded to 184,076 emergency calls for service in 2023.

Future Plans[]

Funding has been approved to call for bids for the following apparatus:
- Two squads
- Two air/light trucks
The city has purchased land at Rexdale Boulevard & Queen's Plate Drive for future Fire Station 414
Fire Station 332 is being investigated in terms of asset sale and relocation. The new site will most likely be located on the south face of Metro Hall (55 John Street) to unlock the profitable land at 260 Adelaide Street West for high density condos. Apparatus will be relocated.
Fire Station 325 is slated to be 'renewed' with the Regent Park redevelopment continuing. This will see the new fire station in the ground floor of a condo.
New Fire Station-Christie: A stand-alone station based on the projected timing of the Christie redevelopment.
New Fire Station-Lower Don Lands: A new fire station, integrated into the base of a mixed-use building, in either Villiers Island or the McCleary District of the Port Lands.
Replacement of Fire Boat William Lyon Mackenzie.
The City is looking at the possibility of purchasing 2 additional High Rise Units for East and West Commands due to a greater number of multi-storey buildings.
