About[]
Thurston County Fire Protection District No. 16 was known as Gibson Valley Fire District 16.
History[]
On September 15th, 1970, a Special Election was held to determine if Thurston County Fire Protection District No. 16 should be formed. The votes were cast in favor of forming the district, with 38 votes in favor of and 1 vote against the formation of the district. The district was officially formed on September 28th, 1970.
On December 1, 1970, a contract was entered with Lewis County Fire District 12 for their furnishing of services to Fire District 16.[1]
The district was unofficially called "Bucoda Fire District #16" due to its location in the unincorporated areas surrounding the Town of Bucoda from its formation until the early 1980's, when the name was changed to "Gibson Valley Fire District #16", named for an early settler of the area, Joseph Gibson.
On April 13, 2017, Thurston County Fire Protection District No. 16 merged with Thurston County Fire Protection District No. 12 as Fire District 16 lacked volunteers to adequately respond to calls.
