Thurston County Fire District No. 13 operates as the Griffin Fire Department.

Griffin Fire Department was named after Judge Griffin, who donated land in the area for the construction of a new school after the old school nearby burned down in 1926.

Area Served[]

Interlocal Agreements[]

The agreement, which is renewed every 5 years allows any Fire & EMS agency to request aid from any other Fire & EMS agency for the purpose of dealing with large fires or other emergencies.[1]

History[]

Thurston County Fire District 13 was formed on September 11th, 1962 to better serve the residents of the Steamboat Island Peninsula. $5,000 was raised to build 2 Fire Barns, later becoming Stations 13-1 and 13-2.

In July of 1963, 2 Ford F-600s (750/600) were leased from Western States Fire Apparatus. A used Union Oil Tanker was later converted into a Tender. In 1964, Plectron Radios were purchased and installed in each volunteers house.

On Decmber 28th, 1964, a hearing was held regarding the merger of approximately 1mi2 of land along Madrona Beach from the jurisdiction of McLane Fire District 9 to Griffin Fire Department. No objections were made at the hearing and the Board of County Commissioners approved the merger on the same day.[2] The reason for the merger was that, when the land was first placed within the boundaries of McLane Fire District 9 in 1953, the closest fire station was McLane Fire Station 91, however, upon the establishment of Griffin Fire Department, Station 13-1 was built less than ¼ mile from the northern border of the merger area. The merger with the Griffin Fire Department allowed much quicker service to the area.

On the September 15th, 1970 Primary Election, voters approved a $47,500 bond issue that funded the purchase of a new Ford / Western States tender.

In 1996, a Citizens Advisory Committee advised that Stations 13-1 and 13-2 should be expanded. On the September 17th, 1996 Primary Election voters approved a $2.26 million bond to renovate Stations 13-1 and 13-2 and to add living quarters, with 1,218 "yes" votes and 588 "no" votes.[3]
