The Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Tacoma, a port city situated along Washington's Puget Sound in Pierce County, of which it is the county seat, and located 32 miles southwest of the City of Seattle. The city's name is derived from the indigenous (Salish) name for nearby Mount Rainier. Incorporated as a city on November 12, 1875, Tacoma, the third-largest city in Washington State by population and land area, has a population of approximately 219,346, and encompasses an area covering 62.42 square miles. TFD also provides contracted fire and EMS protection to the City of Fircrest and Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 10, which includes the City of Fife, which adds a population of approximately 18,000 and an extra 10 miles to the covered area. Tacoma is bordered by the Puget Sound to the north, the City of Federal Way to the northeast, the cities of Milton and Fife, as well as the unincorporated community of Waller to the east, the City of Puyallup to the southeast, the unincorporated community of Parkland to the south, and the cities of Lakewood, Fircrest and University Place to the southwest, and west.

The Tacoma Fire Department is budgeted for 509 personnel, both sworn (456) and non-sworn/support staff (53), which includes the fire chief, two deputy chiefs and four assistant chiefs, providing structural firefighting, emergency medical response, technical rescue, water rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire prevention, fire investigation, code enforcement, and public education to the citizens of Tacoma. Minimum daily staffing stands at 79 operating out of sixteen fire stations. The department is organized into an Office of the Fire Chief, an Operations Bureau and an Administrative Bureau. During 2024, Tacoma Fire responded to approximately 53,010 calls for service, with over 80% of those consisting of EMS calls. All Tacoma firefighters are trained to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level, as well as to the Hazmat Operations level, with 27 firefighters certified to the Technician level. The Technical Rescue Team is comprised of 24 Technician level personnel, supported by 50 personnel trained to the Technical Rescue Operations level. TFD operates an emergency communications center and receives calls via the 9-1-1 system and from private alarm companies. The Tacoma Fire Department currently holds an ISO Class 3 rating.

History[]

The City of Tacoma Fire Department was legally established by Ordinance No. 26 in July 1880. On July 13, 1994, the Tacoma Fire Department began providing fire & EMS services to Pierce County Fire District 10.[1]
