History[]
Syracuse FD took over ARFF service at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Dec. 1, 2003. Prior to this, fire and rescue operations had been provided by NYDOT Department of Aviation. [1] On July 1, 2022, the 174th Attack Wing Fire Department assumed responsibility for fire and rescue operations at the airport from the Syracuse Fire Department. The majority of apparatus and the station were owned by the Airport Authority and were transferred to the 174th AW for their use.[2]
In January of 2023, Syracuse Fire Department commenced 24/7 ALS ambulance service. Previously SFD ambulances were only called out when no other ambulance service was available. This brought the number of ALS units in SFD service to 5 (both Medic 1 & Squad 1 are ALS units).
In January of 2025, the Syracuse Fire Department announced the addition of a new Engine Company operating out of Station 12 Downtown. The company will consist of a standard Engine and a Tahoe-Mini platform, this company is due to enter service in July of 2025 as part of a greater departmental overhaul.[3]
The Department's countywide numbers are 79 (For SFD Ambulance) and 99 (Firefighting). The Onondaga County system goes department number, than apparatus, then number (eg. 99E03 would be SFD Engine 3), however these identifiers are rarely used.
