On April 22, 2008, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire District 1 (Sumner), and the annexation of the City of Sumner into East Pierce Fire with a combined 1,637 "yes" votes and 186 "no" votes.[1] The 2 agencies had both previously contracted services from East Pierce since 2006.
