Sterling Machine & Manufacturing Co. Ltd. was a fire apparatus builder located in Owen Sound, Ontario.
History[]
Sterling was formed in 1945 or 1946, starting when the locally prominent Hindman family acquired the Malleable Iron Works. A metal fabricator, Sterling started building hose reels and racks before moving into trailer pumps and apparatus in 1947. In addition to fulfilling a sizable order of small apparatus on Jeep chassis for the Canadian Department of National Defence, Sterling built a few full-size trucks for municipal departments. They also worked with C.E. Hickey and Sons in Hamilton and Marsh Pumps (Canada) Ltd., using designs licenced from Marsh's parent, the American Fire Apparatus Company. Production ceased when the Sterling plant was sold in 1952.
