Department Overview[]

Steele Creek Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to the residents of the Steele Creek Community in western Mecklenburg County (NC).  The department’s service area is approximately 28 square miles with a population of 17,000. The department responded to 1,865 calls for service in 2022. The department is transitioning to a career department and currently staffs 1 engine company, 1 rescue-engine company and a ladder company.

History[]

The Steele Creek Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1954 as the Steele-Berry Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. and was the fourteenth Volunteer Fire Department in Mecklenburg County. The department operated out of a single station on NC160, near Shopton Road (current Fire Station #1).

In 1959, the department changed their name to the Steele Creek Fire Department, and they built a second station (Fire Station #2) further south on NC49.  Between 1970 and 2000, the City of Charlotte annexed major portions of Steele Creeks service area and the district has been divided into two distinct areas.  In the early 2000s, changes in NC annexation laws have dramatically slowed Charlotte’s expansion.

In 2022, the department proposed the construction of two new fire stations.  The first would replace the current Fire Station #2 with a new station on Woody Point Road. The current Fire Station #2 is located inside the City of Charlotte limits and much of Steele Creek District #2 has an extended response time because of the station’s location. The department also proposed building Fire Station #3 to better serve the Palisades area in District #2. Once the new stations go into service, the current Station #2 will be turned over to Atrium Health which has entered into an agreement to purchase the land.

At the end of 2022, the department placed Ladder 2 in-service. That Ladder was originally scheduled to operate from the proposed new Station #2, however the department reached an agreement with the City of Charlotte Fire Department to house Ladder 2 and its crew at Charlotte Fire Station 38.  With this agreement, the department has placed the construction of the new Fire Station #2 on hold.

In July of 2023, the department broke ground on their new Fire Station 3. The 12,500 sq ft 3-bay station was built to Charlotte Fire Department specifications in case they ever take over providing service for the area. The station is expected to be completed in early 2024.
