The St. Louis Fire Department (STLFD or STL City Fire) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of St. Louis, a global city located on the west bank of the Mississippi River opposite East St. Louis, Illinois, just south of the confluence of the Missouri River in east-central Missouri. The city is named for King Louis IX of France and was incorporated in 1822. Separated from St. Louis County in 1876, the city encompasses an area covering 66.17 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 301,578, with a daytime population of over 2 million. St. Louis' eastern boundary is the Mississippi River, which separates Missouri from Illinois. The Missouri River forms the northern line of St. Louis County, except for a few areas where the river has changed its course. The Meramec River forms most of its southern boundary.

Department Profile[]

The St. Louis Fire Department is the largest fire department in the State of Missouri with 950 sworn / uniformed personnel and 191 non-sworn / civilian support staff. The St. Louis Fire Department is led by a fire commissioner / fire chief who is appointed by the director of public safety. The STLFD'S's organization consists of seven bureaus with each commanded by a deputy chief, deputy fire chief, or civilian manager. These bureaus are the following: Bureau of Emergency Medical Services; Bureau of Prevention; Bureau of Communications; Bureau of Support Services; Bureau of Fire Inspections; Bureau of Fire Investigations; and Bureau of Fire Suppression. The Fire Suppression Bureau operates three shifts, each commanded by a deputy fire chief. Firefighters respond from 30 engine houses located throughout the City and organized into six districts. Each district is commanded by a battalion chief. There are 36 front line fire suppression apparatus staffed by a minimum of four firefighters per apparatus. Of the 36 front line fire suppression apparatus, 34 have pumping capabilities with 25 of them having aerial capabilities.

History[]

The first organized fire department in St. Louis was created in 1822 consisting of volunteers. On September 14, 1857, the department was organized as an all-paid department, the third oldest fully paid fire department in the country, behind the Cincinnati Fire Department and the Providence Fire Department. In 1904, the city hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair, and the Summer Olympics / the Games of the III Olympiad with the fire department manning four stations at both events. In January 1958, the St. Louis Fire Department took control of fire protection services at the Lambert St. Louis Airport. In 1986, the department enacted a total quint concept, which was discontinued around the mid-2000's.

Engine Company 2 was eventually relocated here. When the station was closed, Engine Company 2 relocated to station 24 at 314 South 12th Street and Hook & Ladder 6 was relocated to station 6 at 12 North 9th Street.
3 Carondelet Ave and Capital Street (later known as 3648 South Broadway and Salena) 1874-1918 Additional bay added 1875. Housed Engine Company 3 and later Fuel Wagon 4. Torn down in 1918 where a new building was built on existing location.

4 2233 Cole Street 1871-1933 Housed Engine Company 4 and in 1931 Water Tower 1 was assigned here. Water Tower 1 was assigned to a different location after the closure of station 4. Torn down.
5 216 North 7th Street 1858-1902 Originally operated by the volunteers of Missouri Fire Company 5 until 1859 and later taken out of service. 1867 Hook & Ladder 1 was assigned here and in 1869 Engine Company 5 was reactivated. 1872 Hook & Ladder 1 was relocated to another station at 2400 North 22nd Street. In 1874 Hook & Ladder 2 was organized and operated there until both companies were reassigned to a new station. Engine Company 6 was assigned here and newly organized Hook & Ladder 3 and operated here until 1902.
5 2400 North 22nd Street 1874-1953 Housed Engine Company 5 and Hook & Ladder 2. Both companies relocated there in 1953. This location was then used for storage purposes for several years until the station was closed and torn down.

6 12 North 9th Street 1902-1965 Remodeled 1939. Housed Engine Company 6 and Hook & Ladder 3. Both operated there until 1933 Hook & Ladder 3 was relocated. When the station closed for remodeling, Engine Company 6 was relocated temporarily. The station reopened in 1941 Engine Company 6 returned. Hook & Ladder 6 was assigned here between 1941 and 1942. The Canteen Truck came in 1943 to 1944. Rescue Squad 1 ran from this station from 1943 until the station closed. When the station closed, Engine Company 6 was taken out of service and Rescue Squad 1 was relocated to another location. Torn down.

9 On west side of North Broadway, between Mound Street and Brooklyn Street 1857 (amalgamation)-1885 Built for the Mound Fire Company 9. Housed Engine Company 4 in 1857 until 1871 where it was relocated to station 4 on Cole Street. At the same time Engine Company 9 was placed here and operated here until the station closed. They were relocated to the new Station 9 on North 8th Street. The building was later torn down.
9 1545 North 8th Street 1885-1957 Engine Company 9 and newly organized Hook & Ladder 7 was assigned here. Water Tower 2 was assigned here between 1942 and 1954. When the station closed, Engine Company 9 and Hook & Ladder 7 was moved to the new station 9 on Le Beaume Street. Building torn down.

When the station closed, Engine Company 18 was moved to station 2 at 508 North 3rd Street. Later torn down.
13 1015 North 11th Street 1857 (amalgamation)-1933 Originally built and operated by the Franklin Fire Company 8. Engine Company 1 was stationed here when STLFD took over until they were relocated to the station at 2411 McNair Avenue. At the same time, Engine Company 13 was organized and was taken out of service when the station closed. Building torn down.
14 1425 Market Street 1858-1929 Originally built and operated by the Laclede Fire Company 10. When St. Louis FD took over in 1858, Engine Company 7 operated here until 1873 when they moved to a new station. With the departure of the company, Engine Company 14 was organized and operated here until the station closed and were moved to a new station. The building was later torn down.
14-24 314 South Tucker Boulevard 1929-present When first opened, Engine Companies 14 and 24 were assigned here. Engine Company 14 was taken out of service in 1933 and Water Tower 1 was assigned here. Rescue Squad 1 came in 1934, Foam Truck 2 in 1936, and Engine Company 2 in 1941. In 1942, Engine Company 24 was relocated to station 53 and Water Tower 1 was removed from service. Rescue Squad 1 and Foam Truck 2 were also reassigned. Later, the station was renumbered as Engine House 2.
15-39 415 South Broadway 1864-1929 Housed Engine Company 3. In 1872 an addition was built to the building and Hook & Ladder 1 was assigned to the station. Engine Company 3 was moved to a new station in 1874 and upon leaving Engine Company 15 was organized along with Chemical Company 1. Hook & Ladder 1 was reassigned to another station in 1877 and Hook & Ladder 4 was organized and assigned here. In 1900, Chemical Company 1 was removed from service and replaced by Engine Company 39.
15-39 415 South Broadway 1929-1969 Housed Engine Companies 15 and 39, Hook & Ladder 4, and Hose Wagon 1. Hose Wagon 1 was relocated to another station in 1942 and in 1960 Engine Company 39 was taken out of service. In 1963 Hook & Ladder 4 was taken out of service and Snorkel Company 1 replaced them. When the station closed in 1969, Engine Company 15 was taken out of service and Snorkel Company 1 was relocated. The building remained standing until it was torn down to build the new Busch baseball stadium in 2005-2006 (the station would have been located in the right field of the current stadium).
16 1337 South Broadway 1858 (amalgamation)-1961 Originally built and operated by Phoenix Fire Company 7. St. Louis FD took over the station in 1858, placing Engine Company 6 which operated here until 1874. Engine Company 16 was organized when Engine Company 6 left and operated until the station was closed. Engine Company 16 was then moved to another station. The station was torn down some time later.
17 3220 Easton Avenue 1874-1925 Housed Engine Company 17 and operated from there until a new station was built next to them. When the new station was built, Engine Company 17 moved over and the station was torn down.
18 223 South Newstead Avenue 1913-1975 Engine Company 50 and Hook & Ladder 19 was housed here. In 1942, Engine Company 50 was removed from service and Engine Company 18 was assigned here. Hook & Ladder 19 was taken out of service in 1974 and Rescue Squad 1 was temporarily placed here. 1975, Engine Company 18 and Rescue Squad 1 were assigned to a different station and the station was closed and later torn down.
19 1120 St. Louis Avenue 1878-1933 Housed Engine Company 19 until the station closed in 1933, where the company was taken out of service. Station was torn down.
20 4551 North Broadway 1880-1960 Housed Engine Company 20. Construction was completed for the south side of the station that doubled its size and housed the newly organized Hook & Ladder 12 in 1897. In 1942, additional companies were stationed here: Fuel Wagon 11, Gas Truck 3, and Hose Wagon 7. In 1960, Hook & Ladder 12, Engine Company 20, and Hose Wagon 7 were moved to the new station when this location closed.
21 3517 Market Street 1883-1928 Housed newly organized Engine Company 21 and Hook & Ladder 5. Fuel Truck 1 was stationed here as well. In 1928 the companies moved to the new station and the station here was torn down.
21 3407 Market Street 1928-1965 Housed Engine Company 21, Hook & Ladder 5, and District Chief 7. Foam Truck 2 was stationed here between 1943 to 1955. Looks like the house was torn down some time after.

23 129 West Krause Street 1871-1921 Housed Engine Company 2. In 1877, Fuel Wagon 5 moved here. An addition to the structure was done in 1882 to the station house Chemical and Hook & Ladder 2 in 1883. The unit operated here until the newly formed Hook and Ladder 11 replaced it in 1895. In 1903, Hook & Ladder 2 was relocated to another station and Engine Company 23 was stationed here. After the station closed, it was torn down.
23 6500 Michigan Avenue 1920-present When first opened, housed Engine Company 23, Hook & Ladder 11, Fuel Wagon 5, and District Chief 10. Over the years, Fuel Wagon 5 and District Chief were reassigned to other stations. In 1986, Hook & Ladder 11 was removed from service. Medic 1 moved into the station in 1999 and was renumbered to Medic 23.

In 1960, Engine Company 28 was reassigned temporarily to House 43 and Hook & Ladder 9 was temporarily assigned to House 10 while House 28 was torn down to build a new station.

At that time, Engine Company 33 moved back here.

37 8300 North Broadway 1909-present Housed Engine Company 37. It was the lone company until 1932 when Hook & Ladder 3 was reassigned here. In 1976, Engine Company 37 and Hook & Ladder 3 were taken permanently out of service. At that time, Engine Company 33 was reassigned here. In 1999, Medic 33 was assigned here to work alongside Engine 33.
38 3500 South Grand Boulevard Renumbered as Engine House 32
38 3500 South Grand Boulevard 1899-present Housed Engine Company 38. They operated alone until 1905 when Hook & Ladder 16 was organized. Additional units were assigned here over the years to include Inhalator Company 2 from 1933-1942 and Gas Truck 4 in 1935. In 1942, Hook & Ladder 16 moved to another station and Hose Wagon 6 was organized. Gas Truck 2 came to the station in 1955. Hose Wagon 6 was taken out of service in 1971 and in 1976 Engine Company 38 was permanently taken out of service and replaced by Engine Company 32. They operated with Hook & Ladder 14 until the Total Quint Concept was implemented and the hook & ladder was removed from service. Engine 32 continues to operate today along with Medic 32.
40-41 707 North 11th Street 1904-1956 Housed Engine Companies 40 and 41 as well as Hook & Ladder 13. Over the years, other companies were assigned to the station including Hose Wagon 2 (1928-1942), Inhalator Company 1 (1933-1942), Engine Company 18 (1941-1942) and Hose Wagon 1 was the last to be assigned in 1942. These units were here until the new station opened in 1956.
40-41 921 Delmar Boulevard 1956-1978 Housed Engine Companies 40 and 41 with Hook & Ladder 13 and Hose Wagon 1 all moving here from the old station. Battalion Chief 1 joined them. In 1973, Hose Wagon 1 was taken out of service. In 1975, the St. Louis Fire Department reduced the number of companies they had, and Engine Company 40 became Engine Company 15 and Engine Company 41 became Engine Company 25. These companies continued to operate out of this station until the station was closed in 1978 and razed. Engine 15 moved to Station 2 and Engine 25 to Station 9. Those companies served in those stations until being taken permanently out of service in 1981.

42 5747 Manchester Avenue 1905-present Housed Engine Company 42 where it operated here until 1975 when it was taken out of service. Several hook & ladder companies were briefly assigned to this station including Hook & Ladder 18 (1957-1958) and Hook & Ladder 10 (1959-1960 and 1986-1987). Presently, Engine Company 6 operates out this station.

43 732 North Kingshighway 1905-1932 Housed Engine Company 43, Hook & Ladder 15 and Fuel Wagon 10. These companies moved to the new station when it closed in 1932.

Over the years, other companies were assigned for a time including Inhalator Company 3 (1933-1942), Hose Wagon 10 (1942-1946), Hose Wagon 12 (1949-1966) and Rescue Squad 1 (1966-1974). In 1975, Engine Company 43 was permanently taken out of service and Engine Company 28 was assigned here. They continue to operate today alongside Hook & Ladder 5, the HazMat task force and Battalion Chief 5.

44 4425 South Compton Avenue 1906-present Housed Engine Company 44 until 1942 when it was taken out of service and replaced by Engine Company 4. Today, Truck 4 operates alongside with Battalion Chief 4 in this station.
45 914 Allen Avenue 1906-1942 Housed Engine Company 45 until they were relocated to Station 11 in 1939. Engine 45 was taken out of service while at that station and Station 45 was closed at the same time in 1942.

46 4161 Kinnerly Avenue 1908-present Housed Engine Company 46 until it was taken out of service in 1942 and replaced by Engine Company 10. Today Truck 10 and Medic 10 operates out of this station.

47 5214 West Florissant Avenue 1909-present Housed Engine Company 47 until it was taken out of service in 1942 and replaced by Engine Company 12. Engine Company 12 continued to operate here until 2009 when Hook & Ladder 6 was reactivated and continues to be the only company to operate from this station.

48 1400 Shawmut Place 1909-present Housed Engine Company 48 and Hook & Ladder 17. In 1942, Engine Company 48 was taken out of service and Engine Company 13 was reorganized here. In 1946, Hose Wagon 10 was assigned here and operated until 1971. In 1976, Hook & Ladder 17 was permanently taken out of service and Hook & Ladder 3 was reorganized. The operated here until 1987 when the fire department implemented the Total Quint Concept and Hook & Ladder 3 was once again taken out of service. Truck 13 and Medic 13 operate out of this station to this day.

Hook & Ladder 14 was assigned here the same year and operated alongside each other until Hook & Ladder 14 was assigned to Station 32 in 1976. Engine 14 and Medic 14 currently operate out of this station.
50 223 South Newstead Avenue 1913-1975 Housed Engine Company 50 and Hook & Ladder 19. In 1942, Engine Company 50 was taken out of service and replaced by Engine Company 18. Engine Company 18 was taken out of service in 1975 and the station was closed a short time latter.
51 4300 Eichelberger Street 1910-1956 Housed Engine Company 51 and has the distinction of being the last to be assigned horse-drawn companies. In 1942, Engine Company 51 was taken out of service and replaced by Engine Company 19. The station closed in 1956 when Engine Company 19 moved to present day Station 19.
52 6810 Clayton Avenue 1911-1957 Housed Engine Company 52 and Hook & Ladder 18. In 1942, Engine Company 52 was taken out of service and replaced with Engine Company 22. The station was closed in 1957 due to the construction of Interstate 64/Highway 40.

56 5000 South Kingshighway Boulevard 1926-present Housed Engine Company 56 and Hook & Ladder 23. At this time, this marked the highest number of fire stations and companies in the history of the fire department. In 1942, Engine Company 56 was taken out of service and replaced with Engine Company 36. Hook & Ladder 23 was taken out of service and replaced by Hook & Ladder 4 in 1975. Today, Hook & Ladder 3 and Truck 36 operate out of this station.
