The College of Saint Benedict & Saint John's University Fire Department protects over 50 buildings on the 2500 acre campus in St. Joseph, Minnesota. The CSB/SJU Fire Department is a volunteer department made up of over twenty volunteers from the monastic community, students, and near-by residents.The department regularly runs 300+ calls annually 60% classified as medical and 40% classified as fire related. Providing protection to the Saint John's Abbey, Saint John's Prep (middle school and high school), and the residential population of Saint John's University. The average full time population varies but during the school year is roughly 2000 swelling daily to 2500. During sports games and other events the population in district can easily swell to 20,000+. The history of SJFD is colored with several dramatic fires that give good reason for a unique department such as SJFD to exist. Open house is hosted annually in the morning before the SJU homecoming football game
