Spokane Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical services to approximately 229,447 residents within 69.5 square miles of the City of Spokane. The city consists of a variety of areas including urban, suburban, industrial, and wildland areas. SPD also provides mutual aid for the surrounding county fire districts.
Department Profile[]
Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was founded in 1884. It is is comprised of 447 career members across 16 different stations. SFD Operations Division is split into 2 battalions, the north battalion and the south battalion, each with 2 platoons. A Deputy Chief supervises the 9 Battalion Chiefs in the Operations Division. SFD is comprised of 4 different shifts: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. Firefighters have a 24 hour shift followed by 72 hours off. SFD has specialty teams that include the Water Rescue Team, Rescue Task Force Team, Technical Rescue, and Hazardous Materials Team. Team SFD responded to a record 54,312 calls for service in 2024, of these 82% are EMS related calls. The busiest unit in the department is Engine 1, responding to 5,888 calls out of the 54,312 calls.
