The Southard Fire Department No. 1 was formed in 1933.

Southard FD No. 1 is a combination career and volunteer department with 4 career firefighters and 40 volunteers with career firefighters staffing from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays. They also have a a Haz-Mat Team that responds to hazardous materials spills in Monmouth County.
