Area Served[]

The South San Francisco Fire Department (SSFFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of South San Francisco, known as "South City" and located on/in the San Francisco Peninsula/San Francisco Bay area in San Mateo County, Northern California. Incorporated as a city on September 19, 1908, South San Francisco encompasses an area covering 30.17 square miles and serves a population of approximately 66,105 inhabitants. South San Francisco is bordered by the cities of Daly City, Colma and Brisbane, as well as San Bruno Mountain on the north; by the San Francisco Bay on the east; by the City of San Bruno, as well as by San Francisco International Airport to the south; and by the City of of Pacifica, as well as the hills of the northern Coast Range to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

SSFFD has mutual aid agreements with the San Mateo County Fire Department, the CAL FIRE San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, the Colma Fire Protection District, the North County Fire Authority, the San Bruno Fire Department, the Central County Fire Department, the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, the Redwood City Fire Department, and the San Francisco Fire Department for San Francisco International Airport (SFO) responses.

Department Profile[]

SSFFD is budgeted for 93 full-time personnel (77 sworn plus 16 non-sworn) staffing a battalion chief's vehicle, four engine companies, one quint company, two ALS and one BLS rescue ambulances, an Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and a training tower. The department consists of a fire chief, a deputy fire chief, a fire marshal, four battalion chiefs, an emergency medical services battalion chief, an emergency services manager, fifteen fire captains, fifteen fire engineers, thirty-nine firefighter/paramedics, six emergency medical technicians, a safety inspector I, two safety inspectors II, two safety inspectors (hourly/contract), a management analyst, two administrative analyst IIs, and an accounting assistant. In addition, the South San Francisco Fire Department cross staff a type I heavy urban search & rescue unit, an OES Type 6 wildland engine, as well as a rescue boat. Minimum on duty staffing is 20 persons working a 2/4 schedule with a 24-day on duty cycle (2/24 hour shifts with 4 days off) and includes one certified firefighter/paramedic on each front line apparatus, two in the ALS rescue ambulances, and two emergency medical technicians in the BLS ambulance. The South San Francisco Fire Department is the only fire department in San Mateo County that provides its own patient transport services.
