Mason County Fire District 4 operates as South Mason Fire & Rescue.

South Mason Fire & Rescue responds to approximately 1,800 calls per year for service.

Interlocal Agreements[]

Mason County Fire District 4 is part of an Interlocal Agreement with Olympia Fire Department (OFD) for apparatus maintenance, where OFD provides the mechanics and Lacey Fire District 3 provides the maintenance facility.

South Mason Fire & Rescue is part of the Interlocal Agreement with the Mason County Sheriffs Office for the Mason County Special Operations Rescue Team, providing Rope Rescue, Swiftwater Rescue and Mountain/Wilderness Rescue to Mason County.

South Mason Fire & Rescue is a combination fire district with a total of 12 fulltime firefighter/EMTs, a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Director of Finance and Human Resources and a part time Community Outreach Coordinator. South Mason Fire & Rescue also has approximately 20 volunteer firefighters.

History[]

On February 4, 1950, Mason County Fire Protection District No. 4 was established in the Arcadia area. On May 18, 1970, the Kamilche area merged with Fire District 4, replacing the previous Kamilche Fire Auxiliary.[1]

Voters approved an increase of Fire Commissioners from 3 to 5 members at the November 8, 1994 General Election.[2]

In 2023, Fire District 4 re-branded to South Mason Fire & Rescue.
