Area Served[]

The South Lake County Fire Protection District (SLCFPD), through a contract with the California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE), provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the unincorporated communities of Cobb, Hidden Valley, Loch Lomond, and Middletown, all located in southern Lake County, northern California. The fire protection district encompasses an area covering 285 square miles and serves a population of approximately 11,000 inhabitants. The district is bordered by the Kelseyville Fire Protection District to the north; the Lake County Fire Protection District to the north and east; Napa County to the south; and Sonoma County to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

South Lake County Fire has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, the Kelseyville Fire Protection District, the Lake County Fire Protection District (California), the Lakeport Fire Protection District (California), and the Northshore Fire Protection District (California).

Department Profile[]

The district is budgeted for one appointed fire chief, fourteen paid call / full time fire suppression employees (one fire captain, one fire captain/paramedic, one fire engineer, six and a half fire engineer/paramedics, two firefighters, and two and a half firefighter/paramedics), plus two full-time non-sworn civilian support staff (one communications operator and one staff services analyst), augmented by 25 volunteer/part-time firefighters. SLCFPD currently staffs Middletown, Cobb, and Hidden Valley stations on a daily basis with two response personnel at each location. During 2023, the District responded to 1,794 calls for service, 64% of which were of a medical nature.

History[]

The South Lake County Fire Protection District was formed in 1925 as the Middletown Fire Protection District. The district was staffed exclusively with volunteers until the first paid member was employed in 1978. On March 18, 1987, the district was renamed as the South Lake County Fire Protection District. Effective July 1, 2000, South Lake County FPD entered into a contract with CAL FIRE for the provision of services.
