Area Served[]
The South Fire District is one of three fire departments serving the city of Middletown, Connecticut. The SFD responds to a variety of hazards, including a natural-gas fed power plant (that was the scene of a devastating explosion in February of 2010), a state highway, part of the Connecticut River, residential & commercial areas, the Connecticut Valley Hospital psychiatric facility, and large swaths of forested & undeveloped land, some of which is part of the Cockaponset State Forest.
History[]
Originally founded as the Russell Manufacturing Company fire brigade in 1915 (later known as the South District Protective Association), by 1930 they had expanded to cover the entire "South Farms" area of Middletown. The district itself was created in 1957 by an act of the state legislature, and the current station was opened in 1969. The district operated with both volunteer and career firefighters for several decades, until 1995, when it became a fully-career department.
