Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Shilo started as a military training facility in 1910. The training area is about 40,000 hectares (155 sq.mi.). The loose sand and gravel terrain with bedrock outcroppings makes it an ideal area for artillery and munitions training. Today Shilo houses about 1,400 military personnel and provides employment for nearly 500 civilian personnel. It is home to the 1st Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and various support units.
