Area Served[]

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Seattle, also known as the "Emerald City," a seaport city as well as the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. Seattle is located on an isthmus between Puget Sound, an inlet of the Salish Sea and Lake Washington. It is the seat of King County. Incorporated as a city on December 2, 1869, Seattle encompasses an area covering 142.07 square miles and serves a population of approximately 737,015. Seattle is bordered by the City of Shoreline on the north; beyond Lake Washington and the Eastside suburbs, by Lake Sammamish and the Cascade Range on the east; by the City of Renton on the southeast; by the cities of Tukwila and Burien, as well as by the unincorporated communities of Bryn Mawr-Skyway, White Center and Boulevard Park on the south; and, beyond Puget Sound, by the the Kitsap Peninsula and Olympic Mountains/Olympic Peninsula on the west. Seattle is the national headquarters for a number of Fortune 500 companies, including Amazon and Starbucks . Boeing's head office is no longer located in Seattle, but remains a major employer in the area.

Department Profile[]

The Seattle Fire Department is the largest fire department in the US State of Washington, and the Pacific Northwest and is budgeted for 1,005 uniformed personnel (38 chiefs, 904 firefighter/EMTs, and 63 firefighter/paramedics) and 83 non-sworn civilian support staff providing emergency response through five battalions, and working out of 33 fire stations (plus Battalion 3/Medic One at Harborview Medical Center) strategically placed around the city in order to maximize coverage and minimize response time. Daily staffing is 216 personnel (220 with upstaffing for two daytime aid cars). The department is organized into Operations, Fire Prevention, Risk Management and Administrative Divisions that support the delivery of critical fire suppression services, including wildland firefighting; emergency medical care; several technical teams, including technical and heavy rescue, dive rescue, tunnel rescue, marine fire response and hazardous materials (HazMat) response; fire prevention and public education; fire investigation; and mutual aid response to neighboring jurisdictions. All Seattle firefighters are certified emergency medical technicians. Emergency responses for SFD are initiated by the Fire Alarm Center (FAC) which is staffed 24/7 by firefighter/EMTs who have completed more than 1,000 hours of additional training to become certified dispatchers. In a BLS incident, a fire engine, aid car and/or ladder truck will be the first responders. If a medical emergency requires ALS, one of the eight medic units will also be dispatched to the scene.

Washington Task Force 1[]

The Seattle Fire Department is a member agency of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team Washington Task Force 1 (WA-TF1)

History[]

The Seattle Fire Department had its start as a volunteer fire department that was taken over by the City of Seattle on April 11, 1884. On June 6, 1889, the Great Seattle Fire broke out and destroyed over 64 acres of the city. Insurance investigators charged the city with not having adequately trained firefighters to provide protection for the residents. As a result, the Seattle Fire Department was officially established on October 17, 1889, as a paid professional department when the Seattle City Council passed Ordinance No. 1212. Established in 1970 as a joint effort between Seattle Fire Department, Harborview Medical Center, and the University of Washington, the Medic One program combines rigorous training and innovative medical techniques in a two-tiered emergency response system. Paramedics provide direct Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to the citizens of Seattle, which previously could only be performed by a licensed physician. In July 2017, a rescue swimmer pilot program was implemented. The new resource provides highly-skilled surface water rescue swimmers to all areas of Seattle on a 24-hour basis. Ideally, there are nine rescue swimmers on each of the four platoons at any given time, dispersed strategically throughout the five battalions. The rescue swimmer program builds on other water rescue programs including the marine emergency response team and the technical dive team. In 2019, SFD launched their Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program / Health One. It is designed to respond to individuals immediately in their moment of need and help them navigate the situation - whether they need medical care, mental health care, shelter or other social services. Health One is a multidisciplinary team, with firefighters and case managers each bringing unique skills and approaches to the scene. The goal of the program is to reduce the impact of non-emergent calls on Seattle Fire's Operations Division, and to better connect individuals in need with appropriate care and services. Health One serves the entire City of Seattle. Within the city, Health One emphasizes several neighborhoods as a function of call volume, equity, or access to services. These focus areas include the downtown core, Pioneer Square, Chinatown/ID, Capitol Hill, SODO, the Central District, Ballard, the University District, and Southeast Seattle. In 2022, the Seattle Fire Department became the first fire department in the state’s history to receive the Protection Class 1 rating from the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau (WSRB).
