Overview[]

The Scotch Plains Fire Department is a combination department with approximately 5 career members and 39 volunteer members protecting a population of 25,000 residents in an area of 9 square miles. The Scotch Plains Fire Department also provides emergency medical services on the BLS level to assist the Rescue Squad.

History[]

The Excelsior Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 was formed in 1869, The Fanwood Bucket & Engine Company was formed in 1884 and a third company was formed called the Goodwill Fire Department. The Township took over the companies in 1920.
