This article refers to the fire apparatus manufacturer. For the city in Saskatchewan of the same name, see Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services.
The Saskatoon Fire Engine Company was a Canadian fire apparatus manufacturer located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Calgary, Alberta.
History[]
Details on the history of the Saskatoon Fire Engine Company are limited. Operations began in the mid-1920s, as Saskatoon built chemical fire apparatus for small towns in the Prairie provinces. By the 1950s, it was a dealer for the American Fire Pump Company and Marsh Pumps (Canada) Ltd., its Canadian affiliate. In 1962, operations were moved to Calgary, but the company retained the name of the city in which it originated. It closed its doors in 1978. Some of its personnel ended up at Superior Emergency Vehicles in nearby Red Deer.
Production[]
Production was concentrated on building commercial chassis pumpers for smaller towns in western Canada, but Saskatoon also built a number of trucks for Calgary and Edmonton, as well as fire departments administered by Parks Canada. A few units were delivered to Ontario in the company's last years and an order was also completed for the Department of National Defence.
