Sanford Fire Apparatus Corporation was an American fire truck manufacturer located in Syracuse and East Syracuse, New York.
History[]
The Sanford Motor Truck Corporation was incorporated in 1912, building one to five ton commercial trucks. In the early 1920s, Sanford began supplying some chassis to apparatus builders Foamite-Childs Corporation and Obenchain-Boyer Company. In 1925 however, Sanford entered the fire truck field in earnest with a custom pumper of its own design. Other custom designs followed, and the company expanded its product line to include hose/chemical cars and hook & ladder trucks. Sanford quit commercial truck production in 1933 to concentrate solely on fire apparatus.
1940 saw a new name, Sanford Fire Equipment Corporation and a relocation to a different factory in Syracuse. The company built pumpers and trailer pumps for the US military during the Second World War. After the war, Sanford resumed production, but on commercial chassis only. In 1960, Sanford was sold, reorganized and renamed Sanford Fire Apparatus Corporation. In 1965, the company relocated to a new plant in East Syracuse. Custom apparatus was offered using Cincinnati cabs, as well as the International CO-8190, Hendrickson and Pemfab. Aerial device-equipped rigs were also available from the early 1970s onward, first using ladders from Grove Manufacturing and later LTI.
By the late 1980s, Sanford was struggling, and ceased operations in early 1990.
