Not to be confused with the San Miguel Fire Department in rural San Luis Obispo County.

Area Served[]

San Miguel Fire & Rescue provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the communities of Bostonia, Casa de Oro, Crest, Grossmont/Mt. Helix, La Presa, Rancho San Diego, and Spring Valley, as well as for the unincorporated areas of El Cajon and La Mesa.

Department Profile[]

San Miguel Fire & Rescue is budgeted for 80 full-time employees who provide suppression, prevention and emergency medical services out of eight (8) fire stations. In FY2021/22, San Miguel Fire & Rescue responded to nearly 15,000 fire and medical-related calls for service. There are three platoons or “shifts” consisting of three people per unit, per station, and one Battalion Chief on duty, totaling 25-staffed positions per 24-hour day. All three platoons rotate duty coverage throughout the year resulting in 24-hour shifts calculated into a 56-hour work week. Each fire unit consists of a Firefighter / Paramedic, an Apparatus Engineer, and a Fire Captain.

Dispatch[]

The San Miguel Fire & Rescue is part the Heartland Communications Facility Authority, a regional fire and emergency services delivery system, commonly referred to as "Central". It was created in 1987, and located in the City of El Cajon. It provides dispatch services for nine local agencies in southern San Diego County. These agencies are: the Lakeside Fire Protection District, Santee Fire Department, Alpine Fire Protection District, Viejas Fire Department, Barona Fire Department, Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Protection District, and Sycuan Fire Department. Together they form the "Central Zone."

California Task Force 8[]

San Miguel Fire & Rescue is a member agency of California Task Force 8 (CA-TF8)

History[]

The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District, one of the largest fire districts in San Diego County, was formed on July 1, 1988, through a merger of the Spring Valley and the Grossmont/Mt. Helix Fire Protection Districts. On July 3, 2008, the East County Fire Protection District joined the San Miguel Fire Protection District as a result of another merger. On October 1, 2018 that area of CSA 115 (Pepper Drive MWD) south of Pepper Drive was annexed into San Miguel FPD. Until this annexation the 440 acre 'island' did not fall within a fire jurisdiction.
