Area Served[]
The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department (SMC Fire) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the cities of Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo, all located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, about halfway between the cities of San Francisco and San Jose, in San Mateo County, Northern California. Established on January 13, 2019, SMC Fire's combined area of coverage encompasses 40.32 square miles and serves a population of over 166,000 inhabitants. The three cities border the City of Burlingame to the north; the San Francisco Bay to the east; the City of Redwood City to the southeast; the City of San Carlos to the south; and the town of Hillsborough, the northern Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as the unincorporated community of Highlands-Baywood Park to the west.

Department Profile[]
The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department is staffed by 166 personnel, utilizing 10 engine companies, two ladder trucks and a battalion chief's vehicle from nine fire stations. The department consists of an Administration Division, an Operations Division, a Training Division, and a Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Division. Engine companies are staffed with three personnel, one of which is a firefighter/paramedic, while the truck companies are staffed with four personnel, one of which is a firefighter/paramedic. The battalion chief vehicle is staffed with one person. The department's Hazardous Materials Response Program operates under a fee-for-service contract with the County of San Mateo to provide hazardous materials emergency response to all jurisdictions within San Mateo County. The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under contract by American Medical Response (AMR). SMC Fire responded to 19,018 emergency calls for service in 2022, the majority of which were medical calls.

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019. The department was formed following the establishment of a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) on November 22, 2017, and represents the merger of the
The original joint powers agreement from 2010 was between San Mateo and Foster City in an effort to lessen the administrative burden and resource allocation between their respective fire departments, with Belmont Fire Department joining the group in 2013. Under the JPA, each member city continues to purchase apparatus to contribute to the department.
