The San Gabriel Fire Department (SGFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of San Gabriel, located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, in Los Angeles County, Southern California. The city is named for the archangel Gabriel. Incorporated on April 24, 1913, San Gabriel encompasses an area covering 4.15 square miles and serves a population of approximately 39,568 inhabitants. San Gabriel is bordered by the City of San Marino to the north, by the City of Temple City to the east, by the City of Rosemead to the east and south, and by the City of Alhambra to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

The San Gabriel Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and through Verdugo Fire Communications Services, with the Alhambra Fire Department, the Arcadia Fire Department, the Burbank Fire Department, the Glendale Fire Department, the Hollywood Burbank Airport Fire Department, Monrovia Fire & Rescue, the Montebello Fire Department, the Monterey Park Fire Department. the Pasadena Fire Department, the San Marino Fire Department, the Sierra Madre Fire Department, and the South Pasadena Fire Department.

Department Profile[]

The San Gabriel Fire Department is budgeted for 34 uniformed / sworn members, as well as a 2-person civilian staff (an executive assistant and a Deputy Fire Marshal), providing structural firefighting, urban search and rescue (US&R), emergency medical services (EMS), advanced life support (ALS), fire prevention, fire investigation, code enforcement, disaster preparedness, CERT training and public education to the citizens of San Gabriel. Daily staffing consists of nine on-duty personnel (one division chief, two fire captains, two fire apparatus engineers, and four firefighter/paramedics, working a 48 hours on/ 96 hours off shift rotation. SGFD is divided into four divisions: Administration Bureau, Operations Bureau, Fire Prevention Bureau and Arson Investigation Bureau. The department's resources include two fire stations and three front-line emergency apparatus comprised of two paramedic assessment engine companies and one paramedic ALS rescue unit. Battalion Chief coverage is provided under a contract agreement for management between San Gabriel and the cities of South Pasadena and San Marino with Battalion 9 operating from station 91 in San Marino. In addition, SGFD cross staffs an urban search and rescue unit which is part of CA-RTF-4, and which is jointly operated with the Monterey Park Fire Department and housed in MPFD station 61.

Dispatch[]

The San Gabriel Fire Department is part of a regional fire and emergency services delivery system referred to as the Verdugo Communications System/Unified Response, located in the City of Glendale, which provides dispatch services for 13 local agencies in the San Gabriel Valley and outside. As a participating agency, the San Gabriel Fire Department has agreed, along with the 12 other member jurisdictions, to eliminate jurisdictional borders for fire resource responses.

The San Gabriel Fire Department is a member agency of California Office of Emergency Services Regional Task Force 4 (CA-RTF-4).

History[]

The San Gabriel Fire Department was originally established on May 13, 1913. In 2014, the city of San Gabriel entered into an agreement with the cities of San Marino and South Pasadena to share fire command.
