Area Served[]
The Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Salt Lake City, the capital and most populous city of the State of Utah, as well as the seat of Salt Lake County. Owing to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named Great Salt Lake City. In 1868, the word "Great" was dropped from the city's name. Incorporated on January 6, 1851, Salt Lake City has a population of approximately 200,133, and encompasses an area covering 110.81 square miles. The city is located in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley and is bordered by the City of North Salt Lake to the north, the steep Wasatch Mountain Range to the east, the cities of Holladay, South Salt Lake, and West Valley City to the south, the Oquirrh Mountain Range to the west, and the Great Salt Lake to the northwest.
Department Profile[]
The Salt Lake City Fire Department is budgeted for 338 sworn and 55 non-sworn support/administrative employees. Sworn employees work a three-platoon system with crews rotating every 48 hours. Its resources include fourteen fire stations and twenty four (24) front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of twelve engine companies, two quint combination engine and ladder companies, three tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck companies, seven aircraft fire fighting rescue (ARFF) units, two light (SUV) medical response teams, and two battalion chief vehicles, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. Each fire engine is staffed with one captain, one engineer, and two firefighters; two of those crew members are certified as paramedics on Medic Engines. Ladder companies are made up of a tiller truck staffed with one captain, one engineer, one tiller operator and one firefighter; all are Basic Life Support certified. SLCFD also cross staffs two hazardous materials units, an urban search and rescue unit, seven wildland units and a swift water rescue team. During 2022, Salt Lake City Fire responded to over 36,000 calls for service, over 80% of those consisting of EMS calls.
Utah Task Force 1[]
Salt Lake City Fire is a member agency of Utah Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 (UT-TF1).
History[]
Between 1852 and 1883 fire protection service in Salt Lake City was conducted on a voluntary basis. In 1883 the Salt Lake City Council established a full-time, paid fire department, after a particularly damaging fire occurred in downtown Salt Lake City on June 21, 1883. The Salt Lake City Fire Department has maintained an ISO Class 1 rating, the first in the State of Utah, since 2017. Currently, only 270 departments, of roughly 44,000 nationwide, have such a rating.
In 2019, SLCFD took possession of a a 19,500 ft² clear-span, 130′ wide by 150′ long insulated warehouse referred to as the Logistics Building. It houses all the reserve apparatus, hose, and equipment necessary to re-stock the Salt Lake City fire stations when time is of the essence. In addition to the apparatus and equipment, personnel of the Logistics Division maintain office space inside the building necessary to maintain and update inventory, and to provide prompt delivery of apparatus and equipment to their stations.
