The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, commonly known as "Metro Fire," provides fire protection and life safety services 24/7 to the cities of Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova, as well as to most of the unincorporated areas and communities of Sacramento County, and a portion of neighboring Placer County, all located in Northern California. Sacramento is Spanish for "sacrament." The district encompasses an area covering 359 square miles and serves a population of approximately 757,000 residents. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is the largest fire agency in the County of Sacramento and the 7th largest in the state. Metro Fire is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors elected by the citizens of the nine geographical divisions in Metro Fire’s area of responsibility.

Department Profile[]

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is budgeted for 717 authorized positions which includes safety, prevention, and support personnel, and has a daily staffing of 160 on-duty personnel working out of 41 active fire stations strategically located throughout its service area, in 51 front line apparatus. Routine and emergency operations are managed with five (5) battalion chiefs with oversight through an assistant chief assigned a 24-hour shift. Sacramento Metro Fire is comprised of three branches - Operations, Administration, and Support Services. Operations includes Fire & Rescue, Emergency Medical, Training & Safety, Special Operations, Homeland Security, Fire Investigation, and Health & Wellness Divisions. The Administration Branch consists of Economic Development, Finance, Human Resources, and Community Risk Reduction. Support Services oversees Facilities, Fleet Maintenance, Logistics Divisions and Information Technology Divisions. In 2019, Metro Fire responded to 96,059 emergency calls, with 68% of those being for emergency medical service.

Dispatch[]

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called the Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS Communications Center (SRFECC), located in the City of Sacramento, which provides dispatch services for 10 fire agencies in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is a member agency of California Task Force 7 (CA-TF7).

History[]

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District was officially established on December 1, 2000 through the merger of the American River Fire Protection District and the Sacramento County Fire Protection District. Prior to this reorganization, the American River Fire Protection District was comprised of the formerly independent Arcade, Arden, Carmichael, Elverta, Florin, Rio Linda, and Sloughouse Fire Protection Districts. The Sacramento County Fire Protection District consisted of the formerly independent Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, North Highlands and Rancho Cordova Fire Protection Districts.
