Area Served[]

The Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Sacramento, the capital city of the state of California and the seat and largest city of Sacramento County. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers in Northern California's Sacramento Valley, the city's name is Spanish for "sacrament". Incorporated as a city on February 27, 1850, it encompasses an area covering 99.77 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 524,943. In addition, SFD also provides fire protection and EMS under contract for the Pacific Fruitridge Fire Protection District and the Natomas Fire Protection District. These contracted areas expand the departments response area to 146 square miles and add an additional approximately 60,000 residents to its area of coverage.

Mutual Aid[]

The Sacramento Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the Sacramento County Airport System Fire Department, the Cosumnes Fire Department, the Courtland Fire Protection District, the Folsom Fire Department, the Walnut Grove Fire District, the Wilton Fire Protection District, the West Sacramento Fire Department, and the Woodland Fire Department.

Department Profile[]

The Sacramento Fire Department is budgeted for 678 full-time firefighters plus non-sworn support personnel, and has a daily staffing of 169 firefighters working out of 24 active fire stations strategically located throughout its service area. Eight stations are located north of the American River, seven stations in the central downtown and eastern sections of the city, and nine stations in the southern portions of the city. The Sacramento Fire Department’s front-line operation is organized into three shifts that operate on a 56-hour work week. Firefighters work a two days on and four days off (48/96) schedule. Suppression companies (engines and trucks) are staffed with 4 personnel consisting of a company officer (captain), a fire engineer, and two firefighters. The department’s 15 ambulances are staffed with 2 firefighter / paramedics or one firefighter / paramedic and one firefighter / EMT. Sacramento Fire responds to more than 100,000 calls for service annually, 75% of which are medical calls.

Dispatch[]

The Sacramento Fire Department is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called the Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS Communications Center (SRFECC), located in the City of Sacramento, which provides dispatch services for 10 fire agencies in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento Fire Department is the sponsoring agency for California Task Force 7 (CA TF-7).

History[]

The Sacramento Fire Department began as a volunteer department on February 5, 1850, one year after the City of Sacramento was incorporated. It was the first volunteer fire department in the western United States. On October 30, 1872, after the city formed Engine Companies 1 and 2, the Sacramento Fire Department was established as a paid fire department, the first paid fire department west of the Mississippi River.
