Area Served

The Riverside County Fire Department (RVC Fire) is an all-risk, all-hazard department that provides fire protection and life safety services 24/7 to the unincorporated areas of Riverside county, the 4th largest county in California, plus by contract to 20 cities. RVC Fire provides these services through a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) / CAL FIRE Riverside Unit (RRU). Riverside County is included in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area, also known as the Inland Empire. When Riverside County was formed in 1893 it was named for the city of Riverside, the county seat. That city, founded in 1870, received its name for its location beside the Santa Ana River. Together, the area covered by RVC Fire encompasses 7,303 square miles while serving a population of approximately 2,418,185. The department's jurisdiction covers extremely diverse environments that stretch from the Orange County line on the west, to the San Bernardino county line on the north, the Arizona State line on the east, and to the San Diego and Imperial County lines on the south.

RVC Fire/CAL FIRE RRU have automatic and mutual aid agreements with the California Rehabilitation Center (Norco), the Calimesa Fire Department, the Canyon Lake Fire Department, the Chuckawalla Valley State Prison Fire Department, the Corona Fire Department (for Hazmat responses), the Hemet Fire Department, the Idyllwild Fire Protection District, the March Air Reserve Base Fire Department, the Morongo Reservation Fire Department, Murrieta Fire & Rescue, the Palm Springs Fire Department, the Pechanga Fire Department, the Soboba Fire Department, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Redlands Fire Department, the Yucaipa Fire Department, the Orange County Fire Authority, the Imperial County Fire Department, the Niland Fire District, San Diego County Fire, the La Paz County Fire Department, Arizona, and the Colorado River Indian Tribes Fire Department.

Department Profile

During the peak staffing period, the Riverside Unit has 1,150 full-time CAL FIRE career firefighters and paramedics, 240 Riverside County & support personnel, supplemented by 150 volunteer/reserve firefighters available assigned to 15 battalions working three alternating 24-hour shifts out of 94 fire stations. The volunteer reserve firefighters are utilized in various functions such as additional staffing on engines, squads or specialized equipment. They may be assigned other tasks as deemed appropriate by the Department.

Riverside County Fire provides dispatch services for the Cahuilla Fire Department, Calimesa Fire Department, Canyon Lake Fire Department, Morongo Reservation Fire Department, Pechanga Fire Department, Soboba Fire Department, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's Chuckawalla Valley State Prison Fire Department, and Idyllwild Fire Protection District.

History

RVC Fire/CAL FIRE RRU had an automatic aid agreement with the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians tribal public safety department (Fire) however, on April 8, 2005, Cabazon disbanded its department.

The City of Banning disbanded its fire department in 1998 and contracted with Riverside County.

In 2017, Calimesa did not renew its contract for service with RVC Fire and formed its own fire department on Jan. 1, 2018.

On January 1, 2022, the City of Canyon Lake formed its own fire department and took over RVC Fire's Fire Station 60, renaming it Fire Station 1.
