Area Served[]

The Rialto Fire Department (RFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Rialto located in Southern California’s Inland Empire region, 56 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in San Bernardino County. Incorporated as a city on November 17, 1911, it encompasses an area covering 24.09 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 104,026 inhabitants. Rialto got its name either from a combination of the Spanish words 'Rio" and "alto", meaning high river and based on the canal that brought water from Lytle Creek to the developing town, or from the famous Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. The city of Rialto is bordered by the San Bernardino National Forest to the north; the unincorporated community of Muscoy, as well as the Lytle Creek wash to the northeast; the City of San Bernardino to the east; the City of Colton to the southeast; the unincorporated community of Bloomington to the southwest; and the City of Fontana to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

The Rialto Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Colton Fire Department (California), the Fontana Fire Protection District (California), and the CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit.

Dispatch[]

The Rialto Fire Department is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.

Department Profile[]

The Rialto Fire Department is budgeted for 82 sworn personnel (1 fire chief, 1 division chief, 3 battalion chiefs, 1 fire marshal, 1 assistant fire marshal, 1 EMS coordinator, 1 EMS Quality improvement coordinator, 1 training officer, 48 first responders/captains, engineers, firefighter-paramedics, and 24 ambulance operators/EMT-1s/paramedics) as well as 5 non-sworn personnel (1 disaster management coordinator, 2 fire prevention specialists, 1 executive assistant and 1 senior office assistant), and has a daily staffing of 25 personnel.

RFD's resources include five fire stations and ten front-line emergency vehicles comprised of four paramedic engine companies, one paramedic truck company, four paramedic rescue ambulances, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three alternating 48-hour rotating shifts. In addition. Rialto Fire cross staffs one hazardous materials unit, one technical rescue unit, one type 3 wildland unit and an OES Type-6 wildland unit. Each station has a minimum of one firefighting apparatus staffed with a minimum of three personnel. At least one crewmember on each emergency response unit is a licensed paramedic who is fully equipped with advanced life support equipment and medications. The four paramedic ambulances are staffed with two ambulance operators whom are at a minimum EMT's and/or licensed paramedics. RFD responds to over 12,475 incidents per year, approximately 85% of which are medical calls.
