The Renton Regional Fire Authority (Renton RFA) is a special purpose district that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Renton, located in the Puget Sound Region, at the mouth of the Cedar River in King County, Washington state. In addition, Renton RFA has been serving former King County Fire District 25 since July 1, 2016, as well as King County Fire District 40 since January 1, 2022, the later under a 20-year contract.

Renton is an inner-ring suburb of Seattle, situated 11 miles southeast of the downtown area of the Emerald City. The city takes its name in honor of Captain William Renton, a local lumber and shipping merchant. Incorporated as a city on September 6, 1901, Renton encompasses an area covering 25.27 square miles, which includes the Boeing Renton Factory, and serves a population of approximately 106,785 inhabitants. Renton is bordered by the City of Newcastle to the north, by unincorporated land on Cougar Mountain to the northeast, by unincorporated King County, including the community of East Renton Highlands. as well as the Maplewood Heights area, to the east, by the unincorporated community of Fairwood to the southeast, by the City of Kent to the south, by the City of Tukwila and the unincorporated community of West Hill to the west, and by the unincorporated community of Bryn Mawr-Skyway, as well as by the southeast shore of Lake Washington, to the northwest.

Department Profile[]

Renton Regional Fire Authority is made-up of five divisions: Response Operations, Emergency/Health and Safety, Office of the Fire Marshal, Support Services, and Administration. The Response Operations Division oversees the authorities' firefighters and manages specialty teams, including water rescue, technical rescue, and hazmat. The Emergency/Health & Safety Division provides the full spectrum of emergency medical services (EMS) to the district. The Office of the Fire Marshal provides fire inspections, investigations, permitting, plans review, and public education. The Support Services Division manages all of Renton RFA’s facilities, fleet, logistics, and planning. The Administration Division manages the finance, HR, IT, communications and administrative support sections of the organization.

The Renton Regional Fire Authority is a member agency of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Washington Task Force 1 (WA-TF1)

History[]

At the April 26, 2016 Special Election, voters approved the merger of the City of Renton and King County Fire District 25 with 8.343 "yes" votes and 4,976 "no" votes,[1] forming the Renton Regional Fire Authority on July 1, 2016. The RFA is governed by a six-person board, consisting of three (3) Renton City Council members and three (3) Fire District 25 Commissioners.  There is also one non-voting member representing King County Fire District 40.

On January 15, 2018, Renton RFA began providing services to King County Fire District 40, which had previously contracted services from the City of Renton since 2008.[2]
