Area Served[]

The Redlands Fire Department (RFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Redlands located at the base of the San Bernardino mountains, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and 45 miles west of Palm Springs, in San Bernardino County, Southern California. Incorporated on December 3, 1888, the city takes its name from the color of the adobe soil present in abundance during the time of its founding. Redlands Fire serves a combined population of approximately 73,168 inhabitants in an area covering 36.24 square miles. The city is bordered by the City of Highlands to the north; the unincorporated communities of Mentone and Crafton, as well as the City of Yucaipa to the east; the City of Calimesa in Riverside County to the southeast; the San Bernardino Valley and San Bernardino Mountains to the south; the City of Loma Linda to the west, and the City of San Bernardino to the northwest.

Mutual Aid[]

Redlands Fire has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, San Bernardino National Forest Fire Suppression, the Colton Fire Department, the Loma Linda Fire Department, the Rialto Fire Department, and the San Manuel Fire Department.

Department Profile[]

The Redlands Fire Department is budgeted for 51 sworn firefighters working out of four fire stations and supervised by a battalion chief on each of the three shifts. The department's resources include seven front-line emergency apparatus, comprised of four paramedic assessment engine companies, one paramedic assessment ladder truck, one BLS ambulance, and one battalion chief vehicle. In addition, Redlands cross staffs two Type 3 wildland engines (one is OES owned), one Incident Support/Air & Light unit, one water tender, and one all-terrain vehicle. Every engine and truck company in the City of Redlands Fire Department has a licensed firefighter/paramedic assigned to it who has advanced life support equipment at their disposal. Apart from the BLS ambulance on loan from Big Bear, Redlands Fire does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. EMS and transport is provided under contract by American Medical Response (AMR). Redlands FD responds to over 11,000 calls for service annually, the majority of which are medical calls.

Dispatch[]

The Redlands Fire Protection District is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.

History[]

The Redlands Fire Department was founded as Redlands Hose Company No. 1 on April 27, 1888 with up to 25 volunteer firefighters.
