The Red Chris Mine originally opened as an open pit copper, silver and gold mine in northwest British Columbia, 18 kilometers south of Iskut. The property was originally owned by BC Metals Corporation and was sold in 2007 to Imperial Metals Ltd. The mine was opened in 2015, and in 2019 Newcrest Mining acquired a 70% stake in the mine in a joint venture with Imperial Metals. In May 2023 the property was sold to the Newmont Corporation, operating as the Newmont Mining Company Limited. The property encompasses 23,132 hectares of land. The mine is in the process of converting from an open pit operation to the underground block cave method. Red Chris Fire & Mine Rescue provides structural firefighting, wildland urban interface and technical rescue response services to the Red Chris Mine site and surrounding area on an as needed basis.
