Area Served[]

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District (RSFFPD) provides fire suppression and advanced life support and emergency medical response for the communities within and surrounding Rancho Santa Fe, 4S-Ranch, Fairbanks Ranch, Cielo, The Crosby, Elfin Forest, and Harmony Grove, all located within the North County Region of San Diego County, Southern California. The District serves a population of over 34,000 residents, and encompasses an area covering 50 square miles.

Mutual Aid[]

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District has mutual aid agreements with the Poway Fire Department, the San Marcos Fire Department, and other local departments.

Department Profile[]

RSFFPD is a full-time fire protection agency comprised of one fire chief, one deputy fire chief, two divisions chiefs, one battalion chief/training officer, three shift battalion chiefs, 51 full-time paid fire suppression positions, and three fire prevention positions. In addition, there is a non-sworn administrative and support staff as well as a number of volunteer reserve firefighters. The Fire District currently operates out of five full-time fire stations, one part-time fire station, and one administration office. The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under contract by American Medical Response (AMR).

Dispatch[]

The The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called the North County Dispatch Joint Powers Authority, commonly referred to as "North Comm", located in Rancho Santa Fe, which provides dispatch services for 15 fire agencies in North San Diego County.

History[]

On October 14, 1946, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors appointed the first fire commissioners to the newly formed Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, an all-volunteer District. Prior to this time, fire protection for the area was provided by the California Division of Forestry (CDF). During the first years, the fire district was housed in a shed owned by the Irrigation District. In 1951, a $19,000 loan was obtained which was used to construct what was known as the village fire station. Over the years, many hours of volunteer labor were utilized to construct additional facilities on El Fuego. The communities of Village Park and Olivenhain were annexed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the 1960’s, the Rancho Santa Fe Board of Directors agreed to a mutual contract to share the fire chief’s position with the Solana Beach Fire Protection District. In 1979, a second fire station was constructed in Village Park serving a portion of Encinitas and the Olivenhain Valley. A third fire station was constructed in 1983 in Fairbanks Ranch to serve not only Fairbanks Ranch, but also Whispering Palms, Circo Diegueno, and Rancho Santa Fe Farms with the full-time staff increasing to 33 employees. In 1987 with the incorporation of Encinitas, the responsibility for fire protection for Village Park and Olivenhain was removed from the Fire District and transferred to the newly formed city. In conjunction, the District agreed to sell the Village Park Fire Station for $414,000 to the City of Encinitas and transferred nine personnel to the City. Reorganization took place on the District's eastern boundary, dissolving the County Service Area, commonly known as the Del Dios Volunteer Fire Department, and extending RSFFPD to the city of Escondido boundaries. In 2003, Station 2 personnel moved out of the temporary trailer and into a new station on Four Gee Road. In 2004, Fire Station 4 was completed near the new housing developments of Cielo and The Crosby along Del Dios Highway.

In 2016, the Elfin Forest/Harmony Grove Fire Department merged into the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, increasing it's service area to approximately 50-square miles.
