History[]

The history of the Raleigh Fire Department dates back to the early 1800s when the first fire engine was delivered on March 12, 1819. The following evening, the first volunteer fire company was established with a President, a Vice President, a Captain, four Lieutenants, a Treasurer, and a Secretary. A second fire company, named Perseverance Fire Company, was formed on March 7, 1843 with a Captain, four Lieutenants, a Treasurer, and a Secretary. On February 24, 1849, a new fire company, named the Raleigh Fire Company, was formed. Two more companies were organized in 1852, Fire Company No. 1 on February 28 and a Hook & Ladder Company on March 3.

Following the American Civil War, new fire companies were organized with new volunteers. Two fire companies and a hook & ladder company are organized in February 1867. By 1869, there were five companies providing fire protection to the citizens of Raleigh: Fire Company No. 1, Fire Company No. 2, Hook & Ladder Company, Bucket Company, and the Merchants Independent Fire Company, which was renamed in January 1870 as Rescue Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. All fire companies acted independently with the exception of operating at fire scenes, in which they would all be placed under the command of the Fire Chief of the City Fire Department. Over the course of the 1870s and 1880s, various fire companies were organized or re-organized. By February 28, 1889, seven fire companies now served the City of Raleigh:

  • Rescue Steamer Fire Engine
  • Phoenix Chemical
  • Hook & Ladder
  • Capital Hose
  • Independent Hose Reel
  • Victor Engine
  • Bucket & Ladder

Between 1890 and 1910, several fire companies were disbanded. By December 1912, the remaining fire companies were re-organized into a fully-paid fire department. Career personnel took over the apparatus, equipment, and facilities operated by the volunteers. The Capital Hose and Hook & Ladder companies are re-organized as Hose Company 1 and Truck Company 1, respectively. The Rescue Company was re-organized as Hose Company 2 and the Victor Company was re-organized as Hose Company 3.
