The US Marine Corps Combat Development Command makes up most of the base community of 31,231 military and civilian personnel, including families. contractors and students. MCB Quantico is home to the USMC Officer Candidates School (OCS), The Basic School (TBS) where all newly commissioned and appointed (for warrant officers) USMC officers are taught the basics of being an "Officer of Marines", the Marine Corps University, the Command and Staff College, the Expeditionary Warfare School, the Marine Corps Research Center, and a military airfield known as Turner Field. History[]

On May 14, 1917, Major General George Barnett (December 9, 1859 – April 27, 1930), a pioneer of amphibious warfare and the 12th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, established Marine Barracks Quantico, VA. Thousands of Marines destined to serve in the 4th Marine Brigade during World War I were trained at Quantico. By 1920, the Marine Corps schools were founded and in 1921, the base had been renamed Marine Corps Schools Quantico by the 13th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Major General John Archer Lejeune (January 10, 1867 – November 20, 1942). The Marine Corps Schools eventually developed into today's Marine Corps University. In 1934, the Amphibious Warfare Doctrine, along with special amphibious landing craft were developed at Quantico. The doctrine and craft, developed in the years preceding World War II, would eventually make victory possible in the WWII Pacific theater. Quantico trained over 15,000 USMC and other service officers in these techniques. The first Marine Aircraft Wing was developed at Quantico, as well as the Corps' first helicopter squadron, Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), which since 1976 has had sole responsibility for transporting the President of the United States via helicopter. On January 1, 1968, the Marine Corps Schools was re-designated the Marine Corps Development and Education Command (MCDEC). Virtually all Marine officers receive their basic training at MCB Quantico, as do enlisted technicians from many different disciplines.
