The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the cities of Covington, Kent, Maple Valley, SeaTac, and Tukwila, as well as much of the surrounding unincorporated areas. The authority encompasses an area covering 118 square miles and serves a population of approximately 265,000 residents.

History[]

In 1974, King County Fire District 37 began contracting services from Kent Fire Department. At a special election held on April 27, 2010, voters approved the merger of the two agencies with 12,511 "yes" votes and 4,809 "no" votes,[1] forming the Kent Regional Fire Authority on July 1, 2010. In 2014 the SeaTac Fire Department joined the Kent Regional Fire Authority through contract. In 2017, the name was changed to Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority. In 2018, Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety joined the Fire Authority through contract. On January 1, 2023, the Tukwila Fire Department joined the Fire Authority through a contract for service agreement. On August 1, 2023, voters approved the annexation of the City of Tukwila into the RFA with 1,484 "yes" votes and 1,158 "no" votes.[2] The annexation was finalized on January 1, 2024.
