History[]
“Prestonsburg Fire Department was the first fire department in Floyd County. Prestonsburg being our County Seat was the first established in 1818 and named for John Preston. It was later incorporated as a city in 1867. Most all towns had some form of a fire department from the time they were started. The Floyd County Times only has records starting in 1935. At this time Prestonsburg had a fire truck and a fire chief. There were no trained firefighters at this time. This was incense a bucket brigade style of dept that used men who were bystanders to fight fires once the fire chief arrived with the engine. On February 9th of 1940 The first true Volunteer Fire Department was form in Prestonsburg. The old fire engine was overhauled and repainted. New equipment was purchased and a squad of Volunteers was trained. The department was formed by the Prestonsburg Businessmen's Association to reduce insurance cost on their businesses. Then on February 6th of 1941 a new engine was purchased and the City took back control of the fire department as a volunteer department. They hired a Fire Chief and set a paid call price of $3 to each firefighter who worked a fire. Today Prestonsburg Fire Department operates 4 Engines, 2 Ladder trucks, a tanker, a squad truck and other support vehicles out of 3 stations. They are a paid/volunteer that provides fire protection/prevention, EMS, rescue and other services.”- Floyd County Firefighters Association
