Area Served[]

The Presidio of Monterey Fire Department (POMFD) provides fire suppression and emergency medical service to federal properties and buildings within its jurisdiction, mainly the Presidio of Monterey, an active US Army installation located within the city of Monterey, a coastal community on the Monterey Peninsula of northwestern Monterey County in Central California. It is the home of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLI-FLC), the Defense Department's primary center for foreign language instruction. In addition, POMFD provides fire protection for the former Fort Ord US Army installation located just north of the city of Monterey along Monterey Bay, which closed in 1994 due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) action. Most of the fort's land now makes up the Fort Ord National Monument, managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management as part of the National Conservation Lands, while a small portion remains an active military installation under Army control designated initially as the Presidio of Monterey Annex, and currently as the Ord Military Community. California State University, Monterey Bay also has a presence on the former Fort's property.

Mutual Aid[]

The Presidio of Monterey Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Monterey County Regional Fire District, the Monterey Fire Department, the Salinas Fire Department, the Seaside Fire Department, the Marina Fire Department, and the North County Fire Protection District.

Department Profile[]

The Presidio of Monterey Fire Department consists of 32 full time career civilian firefighters (1 Fire Chief, 1 Assistant Chief, 2 Division Chiefs, 4 Captains, 20 Firefighters, 1 Prevention Chief and 3 Fire Inspectors). Minimum staffing consists of 9 personnel daily who operate a first due engine company, a first due aerial ladder company, and an incident command vehicle out of two fire stations. POMFD also cross staffs two Type 3 wildland fire response apparatus and a water tender. POMFD responds to approximately 1000 calls for service annually. In 2021, the City of Seaside, in which the POMFD main fire station at 4400 General Jim Moore Blvd. is located, notified the Department Of Defense of its intent not to renew the fire station site lease upon its expiration in August 2023. Subsequently to that decision. POMFD is considering relocation of its fire station to the former Fort Ord Chapel site at General Jim Moore Boulevard and Chapel Road.
