About[]

The Port Authority Of NY & NJ Police Department is a bi-state law enforcement and fire suppression agency that protects a wide array of holdings: all four metro airports (Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, and Teterboro), the PATH light rail system, the very large Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, all bridges and tunnels going into and out of New York City (which includes the world's busiest bridge; the George Washington), and the ports, which includes the busy Port Newark. They also have a patrol, plain clothes, detective, emergency services, K9, and counter terrorism bureaus. The Port Authority's vast system is used by millions of commuters and travelers on a daily basis. The Port Authority also operates a railroad car float operation and switching service known as the New York-New Jersey Rail, which was established in 2005. At one time there were quite a few car float operations in the area, the last being the New York Cross Harbor RR. Cars are loaded on what are called "lighters", basically a barge with RR tracks on it that can accommodate up to 14 boxcars. Cars are sent between Brooklyn's 65th St. Yard in Bay Ridge across NY Harbor to Greenville Yard in Jersey City and vice versa, it's a 4 mile 45 minute trip across the harbor. This is necessary due to the fact that there are no direct connection to the NJ side of the harbor, nor does NJ have any direct connection to NYC. In addition to operating the last car float operation in the NJ-NY Metro area, the Port Authority's Port Jersey industrial complex in Jersey City is owned by New York-New Jersey Rail and many customers are switched daily by the railroad, mainly warehouses and distribution facilities.
