History[]
At a special election held on August 16, 1947, voters in the Edgewood area approved the formation of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 8 with 170 “yes” votes to 11 “no” votes. The district was established by the Pierce County Commissioners on August 26, 1947.[1]
Small portions on the outskirts of the district were annexed to the Cities of Fife, Milton, and Sumner. The City of Edgewood was incorporated on February 28, 1996, leaving no remaining unincorporated lands within the district. On April 23, 1996, voters approved the annexation of the City of Edgewood into Fire District 8 with a combined 3,255 "yes" votes and 247 "no" votes.[2]
On February 9, 2010, voters approved the merger of Fire District 8 into East Pierce Fire & Rescue with 2,773 "yes" votes and 642 "no" votes.[3] The merger was effective on April 1, 2010. The district had previously contracted services from East Pierce since late 2007.
