At a special election held on March 14 1961, voters in the South Prairie area approved the formation of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 20 with 43 “yes” votes to 0 “no” votes. The district was established by the Pierce County Commissioners on March 21, 1961.[1]
Fire District 20 later entered into a joint operations agreement with South Prairie Fire Department.
On May 16, 2006, voters approved the merger of Fire District 20 into East Pierce Fire & Rescue with 361 "yes" votes and 28 "no" votes.[2]
