At a special election held on June 6, 1940, voters in the Sumner area approved the formation of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 1 with 214 “yes” votes to 5 “no” votes. The district was established by the Pierce County Commissioners on June 18, 1940.[1][2]
On April 22, 2008, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire District 1 (Sumner), and the annexation of the City of Sumner into East Pierce Fire with a combined 1,637 "yes" votes and 186 "no" votes.[3] The 2 agencies had both previously contracted services from East Pierce since 2006.
