History[]

The City of Pensacola Fire Department (PFD) was established in 1810 as a volunteer fire company, operating out of one station. In the 1870s, the Fire Department absorbed two other departments, including the Germania Hose Company, and forming the Fire Association of Pensacola, which in turn became an extra part of the Pensacola Fire Department. In 1898, a fulltime paid crew was established. In 1947, the department activated its fire prevention bureau to make future buildings safer. Until the 2000s, the city of Pensacola Fire Department was unable to respond to calls to the volunteer fire departments of the wider Escambia County, unless advised. This rule has since been lifted, and the city now works in tandem with Escambia County. The Fire Training Grounds are located on site of Fire Station 4 and sees active use from the local fire academy and Escambia Fire Rescue. Today, PFD is rated as among one of the top 100 fire departments in the country, having received and maintained an ISO rating of 1 since the 1990s.
